| Environment
|
Over the years attention to the
local environment has been top of the list of cuts for successive Tory & Labour
administrations. Lib Dem priorities will be to
- Extend the employment of park wardens and improve
maintenance of our Open Spaces.
- Promote new initiatives to tackle the increasing problem
of abandoned cars.
- Extend the Street Warden scheme.
- Provide a continuous improvement in the state of our roads
by introducing a rolling programme of pothole and pavement repairs.
- Introduce a comprehensive tree maintenance policy that
will ensure residents rights to light and security.
- Promote and encourage the gating of back alleyways
throughout the borough.
- Extend the boroughs recycling schemes, to include
recycling of hard items such as freezers, washing machines and other household
appliances.
- Open Station Road, Hayes to traffic for an experimental
period so that local traders can benefit from passing trade and the problems of roving
gangs can be diluted.
- Terminal 5: Campaign for proper compensation for residents
in the South of the Borough affected by the building of the new terminal.
- Relax tipping charges at approved sites and increase
penalties for Fly Tipping.
Introduce free collection of Hard and Garden rubbish for elderly residents.

| Education
|
Hillingdon Liberal Democrats insist that Education must be
given priority
In Hillingdon borough, Liberal Democrat councillors will
- Build on the improvements in Standards in Hillingdon Schools of the last 4 years.
- Support the building of a new School in Ruislip to give Ruislip children a Ruislip
School.
- Expand certain primary schools to cater for increased demand.
- Improve teacher retention rates by tackling bureaucracy, supporting increased teacher
pay as Lib Dems have done in Scotland.
- Fight to recover spending currently being taken away by the Labour Government.
- Encourage and support School Governors.
- Support initiatives for adult education.
- Create a Library Service for the 21st Century.
|
| Housing
|
Liberal Democrats recognise the excellent work carried out by
the Councils Housing Department. The service provide has consistently achieved a
90%+ approval rating. The borough however still needs to strive to improve the service
and ensure that there is sufficient supply of Social Housing.
- More effort is required to encourage tenants to achieve self management.
- The Council should encourage the transfer of vacant properties to Housing Associations
in return for permanent nomination rights and additional Social Housing within the borough
for Hillingdon Residents.
- Encourage more private landlords by improving the relations between the council and the
private sector.
|
| Transport
|
Hillingdon Liberal Democrats will
- Reactivate the plan to link the Central & Piccadilly Lines
- Provide better and more reliable bus links throughout Hillingdon by developing a hub
system based on shorter routes.
- Extend the Cycling routes throughout the borough.
- Continue to campaign for proper financing of the Tube and oppose Privatisation put
forward by Labour and the Tories.
- Support the proposed tram service along the Uxbridge Road.
|
| Leisure
|
Hillingdon Leisure facilities are outdated and inadequate. The
Lib Dem team support the radical review of the boroughs facilities. It is now time
for action and we will fight to implement the Community agreed programme of improvements. In
particular we will:
- Support initiatives to incorporate Community facilities at the Sidmouth site.
- Create a Library service for the 21st Century.
- Support initiatives to have a top class pool and Leisure centre within the borough.
|
| Community Safety
|
Hillingdon is the second highest borough in London in the
Crimes per Officer tables almost double those in some inner London Boroughs. Liberal
Democrats in Hillingdon will continue to demand increased Police Resources.
- We will demand a fully functioning Police Station in Ruislip to service the North of the
Borough.
- Extend Street and Park Wardens throughout the borough.
- Improve street lighting and replace old and faulty lights faster.
- Promote the gating of back alleys to discourage illegal use.
|
| Health & Social Services
|
Liberal Democrats demand first class care. In 1998 Labour
left Hillingdons Social Services in a shambles. Severely criticised by Government
Inspectors the care of our Children was put at risk and our old peoples homes were in some
case not fit for habitation.
After 2002 Liberal Democrats will
- Increase joint working between the NHS in Hillingdon & the Councils Social
Services Department.
- Provide better accommodation for people with disabilities.
- Campaign to scrap the Labour Government imposed personal care charges for the elderly
and infirm.
- Increase resources for Food Inspectors and other Environmental health posts to protect
residents.
- Continue to campaign for Harefield & Mount Vernon Hospital.
- Ensure there is an independent watchdog for local Health services.
- Lobby the Government to fully recompense Hillingdon for dealing with Unaccompanied
Children.
- Expand the capacity in Hillingdons Old Peoples and Nursing Homes.
- Ensure adequate expenditure on Mental Health Welfare.
